Ready to level up your campaign and add a thrilling touch to your narrative?

You've stumbled upon the right scroll. This article is specially crafted for tabletop roleplaying gamers like you who are aiming to sprinkle more excitement into their games and keep their adventurers on their toes.

Are you constantly questioning, 'How can I improve my campaign?', 'How do I keep my players engaged?', or 'How can I save time in my preparation process?'

Well, my friend, this article is your holy grail. It’s the missing piece of the puzzle you've been looking for. It's the secret ingredient for your fantasy stew. It's the... well, you get the idea.

What you'll find here are five unique, captivating, and yes, downright dangerous goblins to infuse into your campaign. These are not your run-of-the-mill goblin fodder but intricately designed non-playable characters (NPCs) that come with their own backstory, motivations, tactics, and unique stats. These goblins will not only serve as formidable adversaries but will also add depth and intrigue to your campaign storyline.

Each NPC, starting with Skarlug Fangrend, our first dangerous goblin, includes the following sections:

1. Name, Race, and Class: This section is the NPC's basic identification – their name, their race (all goblins, in this case), and their character class, like Skarlug, the Rogue Arcane Trickster.

2. Physical Appearance: This part provides a detailed description of what the NPC looks like. From their height and skin color, to their clothing, and any unique physical features they might possess. This section aims to help you paint a vivid picture of the NPC in your players' minds.

3. Background: Here we delve into the NPC's past, uncovering their history and experiences that shaped them into who they are now. This information can serve to provide depth to the NPC and open up potential story arcs.

4. Motivations: This section reveals the NPC's goals and aspirations. These motivations can range from short-term goals to grand, long-term ambitions, and they help drive the NPC's actions and decisions within the campaign.

5. Tactics: This part sheds light on the NPC's preferred approach to challenges and conflicts. It provides insight into their fighting style, their cunning tricks, or their social strategies, helping you run the NPC in encounters with the players.

6. Plot Hooks: This segment provides potential storylines or events that involve the NPC and can be incorporated into your campaign. These plot hooks serve as ideas to engage your players and draw them into the NPC's narrative.

7. Stat Block: This is the NPC's "character sheet," so to speak. It includes all the mechanical information you need to run the NPC in a game, such as their ability scores, skills, spells, abilities, and more. The stat block is designed to be comprehensive and ready-to-use to save you prep time.

8. Combat Tactics: This portion breaks down how the NPC behaves in combat situations, discussing their preferred moves, strategic use of their abilities, and reactions to different scenarios in battle.

All these elements are aimed at creating a well-rounded, engaging, and memorable NPC that you can directly plug into your campaign. They serve as both a time-saver and a source of inspiration for your own creative process. We hope you find these goblins as delightful (and dangerous) to run as we did in creating them.

skarlug-goblin-npc

1. Skarlug Fangrend

Name: Skarlug Fangrend

Race: Goblin

Class: Rogue (Arcane Trickster)

Physical Appearance: Skarlug stands around 3 and a half feet tall, typical of his goblin kind. He sports a mottled green skin that's toughened with countless scars from reckless adventures. His bulging, yellow eyes are filled with mischief, ever scanning his surroundings for opportunities and risks alike. He has a wide mouth with jagged, shark-like teeth, which he displays with a savage grin. His wiry body, cloaked in worn leather armor, bears a visible strength from a life of constant motion. Attached to his belt are numerous oddly-shaped trinkets and stolen baubles. His fingers always twitch, eager to snap something up or wield the magic he's learned to wield in his chaotic, unpredictable fashion.

Background: Skarlug was always the oddball among his tribe. His inclination for magic, mixed with his lack of discipline and high tendency for risk-taking, often led to dangerous situations that his clan had to clean up. His misadventures eventually led to his banishment, and with a strong sense of self-confidence and ambition, he welcomed the change. Independent and adaptable, Skarlug chose to embrace a life of chaos, unpredictability, and ruthless adventure.

Motivations: Skarlug's short-term goal is to gather immense wealth and establish his dominance among goblin tribes by any means necessary. His long-term goal is to rule over all goblin tribes, establishing a chaotic empire under his whimsical, often cruel rule.

Tactics: Being bold and assertive, Skarlug uses a combination of physical intimidation and cunning deception to achieve his goals. He has no qualms about taking risks or stepping on others. While he does possess analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, his impulsivity often leads him to act before thinking through. He uses his rogue abilities to steal, cheat, and manipulate situations in his favor. His knack for arcane trickery serves as a wild card in his arsenal, creating unpredictable outcomes that he relishes.

Plot Hooks:

  1. The party stumbles upon a village being terrorized by Skarlug, who's enforcing his rule through fear and chaos.

  2. The party finds a valuable artifact or treasure map that Skarlug covets. He will stop at nothing to claim it for himself.

  3. The party encounters a band of misfit goblins that Skarlug has banished from his group. These goblins could serve as potential allies against their common enemy.

Combat Tactics:

Skarlug Fangrend is an unpredictable and challenging foe, constantly adapting his tactics to the changing battlefield. He thrives in the chaos, preferring to keep his enemies off-balance with his arcane trickery and nimble movements. Skarlug often initiates combat with his Telekinetic Grasp, yanking unsuspecting enemies towards him while he strikes with his poisoned magic dagger. His Nimble Escape ability allows him to dip in and out of the fight, evading enemies and making himself a slippery target.

As an Arcane Trickster, Skarlug is as much a mage as he is a rogue. He often uses Minor Illusion and Disguise Self to confuse his enemies, and he is not above using Charm Person to turn the tide of battle in his favor. When faced with stronger foes, Skarlug utilizes his Invisibility or Mirror Image spells to make himself harder to hit, or Major Image to create a distraction.

Skarlug's Sneak Attack ability makes him particularly dangerous, as he looks to exploit situations where he can take advantage of a distracted or engaged enemy. Skarlug often prioritizes high-value targets such as healers or spellcasters, knowing that by neutralizing them, he can cause the most disruption to his enemies.

When Skarlug's hit points drop below half, he becomes more cautious and relies heavily on his Evasion and Uncanny Dodge abilities to minimize damage. He'll use his spells more defensively, keeping his Mirror Image up as much as possible, and using Dispel Magic to negate any beneficial spells on his enemies.

Skarlug's Legendary Actions can turn the tide of any fight. His Steal action, enhanced by his Mage Hand, can deprive enemies of crucial items mid-battle, and his ability to cast cantrips or make a dagger attack as a Legendary Action makes him a constant threat, even outside his own turn.

Despite his cunning and tactical mind, Skarlug is not above fighting dirty. If the situation seems dire, Skarlug won't hesitate to retreat, hide, and regroup, only to strike again when his enemies least expect it. This makes Skarlug a deadly and elusive opponent, a threat that lingers even after he disappears from sight.

kryxla-the-peacemaker-goblin-npc

2. Kryxla The Peacemaker

Name: Kryxla The Peacemaker

Race: Goblin

Class: Fighter (Battlemaster)

Physical Appearance: Kryxla stands slightly taller than the average goblin, with a build that speaks of a life of hard work and combat. Her skin is a vibrant mossy green, dotted with the occasional scar from her days in battle. She has bright, intelligent yellow eyes that sparkle with humor and wisdom. Her hair, a wild mass of jet-black strands, is adorned with various beads and tokens from her victories. Despite her rugged appearance, there's a softness to her, particularly in her warm, genuine smiles. Kryxla's armor, a patchwork of well-maintained leather and metal, carries an aura of authority, bearing the insignia of her tribe: a white dove superimposed over crossed swords.

Background: Kryxla was raised in the tumultuous environment of a goblin war camp. Her leadership and strategic abilities quickly set her apart from her peers, but so did her uncharacteristic compassion and desire for peace. She ascended to the position of warchief not by killing her predecessor, but by rallying her tribe around the idea of a better, more stable future. Despite the violent expectations of her society, she has largely managed to maintain her compassionate leadership, transforming her tribe into a more cohesive and civilized force within the goblin society.

Motivations: Kryxla's short-term goal is to forge alliances with the surrounding tribes and races, aiming to create a stable environment for her people. Her long-term goal is to change the world's perception of goblins, turning them from feared pests to respected allies. She dreams of a future where goblins can coexist in peace with the other races, treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Tactics: Kryxla uses her charisma and negotiation skills to achieve her goals, engaging in diplomacy rather than bloodshed whenever possible. However, she's no stranger to battle and will fight fiercely if her tribe's safety is threatened. Kryxla is also a problem-solver, always searching for creative solutions to the issues her tribe faces, combining her openness to experience and her analytical thinking.

Plot Hooks:

  1. The party encounters Kryxla while she's in the midst of negotiating peace with a rival tribe. Their interaction with her could sway the outcome of the negotiation.

  2. Kryxla seeks the party's help in rescuing members of her tribe who were kidnapped by slavers. She offers an alliance with her tribe in return.

  3. The party finds a medallion bearing Kryxla's tribe's insignia. The medallion turns out to be a call for help, asking for allies in a looming conflict with a more powerful enemy.

Combat Tactics:

Kryxla the Peacemaker is a strategic and supportive combatant, prioritizing the well-being and survival of her allies over dealing heavy damage herself. She utilizes her Goblinoid Tactics to command her allies on the battlefield, creating openings and opportunities for devastating combined attacks. She often commands the hardiest of her allies to strike, compensating for their lack of speed with her keen insight and leadership. Her use of the Maneuvering Attack maneuver allows her to move allies out of dangerous situations or into advantageous positions, offering an extra layer of protection to her forces.

Given her high AC and hit points, she's not afraid to step into the fray herself. She employs her Defender reaction to protect her allies, making herself the target of enemy attacks when an ally within 5 feet is threatened. She uses her Parry and Riposte to deflect attacks, turning the enemy's aggression against them, and striking back when they miss.

When her allies are in need, she uses her Rally maneuver to bolster their resolve, strengthening their defenses and their spirit. As a Brave Leader, Kryxla is an inspiration on the battlefield, her voice a rallying cry that helps her allies resist fear, keeping their morale high.

Once under half her hit points, Kryxla becomes even more strategic, using her Tactical Retreat legendary action to reposition herself safely without drawing opportunity attacks. At the same time, she continues to guide her allies with her Command legendary action, ensuring her presence is still felt strongly on the battlefield even as she herself retreats.

3. Zara "Firefury" Grindtooth

Name: Zara "Firefury" Grindtooth

Race: Goblin

Class: Fighter

Physical Appearance:

Zara stands at an intimidating (for a goblin) height of just over three feet. Her skin is a deep, forest green, almost black under certain light, and her bright red hair is pulled back into a braid that falls down to her waist. Her small, bright gold eyes always seem to sparkle with curiosity and mischief. Strong, lean muscles are visible beneath her skin, testament to the many years she has spent working at the forge. Her hands are calloused, each scar and burn mark a story of a piece crafted and a lesson learned. Her attire is practical and soot-stained, with thick gloves and a sturdy apron, yet her charismatic personality always manages to shine through, giving her an unexpected allure.

Background:

Zara Grindtooth hails from a sizable goblin tribe nestled deep within a mountain range renowned for its vast mineral resources. She learned the craft of blacksmithing from her mother, who was once the tribe's primary weapon maker. From a young age, Zara exhibited a keen analytical mind and an intuitive understanding of metals. When she was not at the forge, she could be found reading ancient scrolls about legendary weapons and armor, further fueling her creativity and sparking her ambition to someday create a piece of such remarkable stature.

Motivations:

In the short term, Zara seeks to master the craft of combining different metals to create alloys with unique properties. Her long-term goal, driven by her high level of ambition, is to forge a legendary weapon that will be remembered throughout goblin history. She dreams of creating a piece that could bring peace and prosperity to her tribe or help a worthy hero on their quest.

Tactics:

Zara's self-discipline and diligence make her a skilled and determined blacksmith. She's not afraid to put in the long hours and hard work required to reach her goals. Her strong analytical thinking and logical reasoning abilities allow her to continually refine her techniques and experiment with new methods. With her charisma and sociability, Zara often collaborates with others, learning from their experiences and sharing her own insights.

Combat Tactics:

Zara "Firefury" Grindtooth fights with the unyielding resilience of the forge fire she commands. She leverages her sturdy build and natural goblin agility to engage foes head on. She uses her Smith's Protection trait proactively, especially when expecting to draw heavy incoming attacks, and her Defender trait makes her a formidable ally in protecting those near her.

Zara's combat style reflects her blacksmith background. She keeps her enemies close, using her heated hammer to deal devastating blows, enhanced by her Damaging Weapon trait. By strategically superheating her weapon on impact, she can cause additional fire damage to her enemies.

Her Molten Breath is a powerful offensive ability she uses when surrounded or faced with numerous opponents. She also uses this ability tactically to create openings for her allies, often coordinating with them to make the most of the confusion and damage her breath weapon can cause.

When suffering from negative effects, she uses her Quick Recovery trait to regain her fighting potential quickly. She's a tenacious combatant, one who fights with a determination as strong and steady as the fires of her forge.

In the face of falling allies or an overwhelming enemy, Zara's selflessness comes to the fore. Using her Defender trait, she often puts herself in the line of fire to shield her comrades, exhibiting a heroic bravery that seems at odds with her otherwise pragmatic goblin nature.

Underneath half of her hit points, Zara fights with renewed fervor, embodying the concept of a forge that burns brightest when it's the hottest. Her fire-themed abilities become even more important, symbolizing her indomitable spirit and will to protect her tribe and her allies, much like the precious metals she safeguards in her forge.

His skin is a muted olive green, decorated with numerous magical sigils tattooed across his body, each pulsing with a subtle, luminescent energy. Ruznak's eyes are bright, an uncommonly vivid gold that sparkles with curiosity and wisdom. His hands, while small, are remarkably dexterous and show signs of a lifetime of intricate ritual gestures. A patchwork of vibrant and mismatched fabrics make up his robe, clearly signaling his shamanistic nature, while a staff embedded with gleaming crystals and gnarled roots is his constant companion.

Background: Ruznak hails from the Howling Hollows, a secluded goblin tribe known for its profound connections to the magical energies of their land. However, unlike his kin, who were mostly warriors and hunters, Ruznak was always drawn towards the mysteries of the universe. From a young age, he exhibited a profound understanding of magic and an almost insatiable curiosity that led him to the path of a shaman. Despite his relative seclusion, Ruznak has been on many daring adventures, driven by his thirst for knowledge and the mysteries of the arcane.

Motivations: In the short term, Ruznak seeks to explore the various mystical realms, to learn new magic and spells, and gather unique arcane artifacts. In the long term, he wishes to establish a magical sanctuary, a haven for those who respect the mysteries of the universe, where magic can be practiced freely, and knowledge can be shared.

Tactics: Ruznak uses his intelligence, intuition, and extensive magical prowess to overcome obstacles. Tactics:

Ruznak, the Wandering Light, prefers to avoid direct confrontation when possible, leveraging his unique magical abilities and wit to control the battlefield. His extensive knowledge of the arcane allows him to anticipate and react to magical threats with his Spell Fuel trait, manipulating the outcome of critical saving throws to keep himself and his allies safe.

Ruznak uses his Damaging Aura strategically to ward off enemies, and his Telekinetic Grasp to pull adversaries into his aura's range, dealing radiant damage to those who approach too closely. He often begins combat with a Guiding Bolt, enabling his allies to focus their efforts on a marked foe.

While not a frontline combatant, Ruznak isn't afraid to enter the fray when necessary. His Defender trait allows him to redirect attacks intended for his allies, absorbing the blow with his relatively robust hit points. If the enemy proves too formidable, he uses his Vanish ability to disengage and hide, relying on his stealth skills to avoid detection.

Ruznak's Quarterstaff is not his first choice of weapon, but it's effective in close combat situations, where he can make use of his Damaging Weapon trait to deliver impactful strikes radiating with magical energy.

If Ruznak is suffering from a debilitating condition, his Quick Recovery trait allows him to shrug off the effect at the start of his turn. This makes him exceptionally resilient against spells and abilities that rely on ongoing afflictions.

When Ruznak finds himself in dire straits, he is known to pull out hidden tricks from his vast repertoire of spells, using unconventional applications of his magic to turn the tide of battle. Despite his pacifist tendencies, Ruznak remains a formidable opponent who can surprise his enemies with his resourcefulness and resilience.
